CLIENT:
TFGM (TRANSPORT FOR GREATER MANCHESTER) / MPACT THALES (LAING O’ROURKE, VOLKERRAIL)
START DATE: 2017
END DATE: 2020
OVERVIEW
Go Traffic Management successfully provided traffic management solutions to the £350 million Trafford Park Line project. Spanning three years and 5.5km, GTM have worked with their client to overcome engineering and construction challenges to facilitate public transport access to the largest trading estate in Europe.
The Traffic Line Project involved extending the current Metrolink Network to encompass six new tram stops through the centre of Trafford Park. Improving access for the 1300 businesses and 33,000 employees who work there. To facilitate this extensive project Transport for Greater Manchester appointed GTM as single source supplier.
CHALLENGES
1. COMPLEX PROJECT
The Transport for Greater Manchester project was a highly visible and complex programme of works involving a high number of stakeholders working to tight deadlines.
2. PLANNING
A large number of interdependencies presented planning challenges to enable the client to continue working safely whilst adhering to the overall programme of works.
3. TRAVEL TIME
The Trafford Park Line is situated in the heart of Manchester, close to the Trafford Centre and one of the busiest business trading centres in Europe. Any roadworks cause a major disruption to road users.
SOLUTION
1. EARLY CONTRACTOR INVOLVEMENT
Go Traffic Management worked closely with the Consortium responsible for the works to provide detailed planning and input, looking for solutions to mitigate the impact on traffic flows in the area.
2. USE OF BIM / 3D DESIGN
It was necessary to work in a Common Data Environment (CDE) and towards a BIM Execution Plan (BEP); including Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie)
3. OUT OF HOURS WORKING
Due to the nature and impact of the Trafford Park Line project on the local infrastructure, the majority of work was completed out of hours over an 18 month period.
RESULTS
- The project was completed ahead of schedule with an outstanding health and safety record.
- Traffic management solutions worked with the local council to cater for ITV studio filming and Intu Trafford Centre Christmas peak periods.
- Measures were put in place to address peak demand, such as 80,000 people travelling to and from Old Trafford for sporting and music events
