Solutions for Major Projects

Solution / Contract:
Highways Framework Contract
CLIENT:
Orsted
START DATE: 2017
END DATE: 2022
OVERVIEW
Go Traffic Management gained a 5-year contract with Orsted Energy to supply traffic signals together with barriers at West Coast Operations, Barrow in Furness. Orsted Energy have established a base in Barrow from which to construct and operate nearby offshore wind farms. Orsted asked Go Traffic Management to provide a solution to allow safe transportation of large wind farm turbines through crossings with semi-permanent traffic signals, working in conjunction with barriers.
CHALLENGES
1. Free movement
Orsted needed to enable trucks to transport large wind turbines from their Orsted facility to nearby quays, ready for loading onto ships to take them offshore.
2. Surrounding Areas
The challenge was to identify a solution which enabled movement of large equipment in an efficient manner without causing disruption to the surrounding area.
3. No disruption
Orsted required a resilient solution with 24/7 back up support and no obstruction within the work area.
SOLUTION
1. Civil activities
Civils works were carried out including fitting ducting underground to enable electrical cabling to be fed through to the equipment supplied;
2. New technology
Each temporary traffic signal was fitted with a sensor to detect traffic flow so that when a turbine must be transported towards the dock, the barriers are signalled to drop and traffic flow controlled to ensure a safe passage for the working vehicles.
3. 24/7 support
In case of power failure or damage from a vehicle, Go Traffic Management provided an escalation plan to ensure a swift repair response. The service included provision of back up barriers and battery powered signals to provide temporary traffic management.
RESULTS
Go Traffic Management sourced technical equipment to fulfil the coordination of the works including:
- Civil works
- Cabling
- Signal equipment
- Barriers
- Ducting
- Detection system
- 2D and 3D visualisation
BENEFITS
Orsted continue to develop, construct and operate from Barrow In Furness, using equipment provided by Go Traffic Management.
24/7 resilient solution
87 Turbines have been constructed to date, located in the off-shore wind farm (Walney Extension)
