OVERVIEW
Our client, Murphy Group approached Go Traffic Management to undertake High Speed Lane closures. Closures were required to enable Murphy Group to carry out necessary rail infrastructure rehabilitation and repairs. The works were part of the Great North Rail Project, addressing repairs to the railway bridge spanning the Rainford Bypass (A570) in St Helens, Merseyside.
CHALLENGES
1. Planning and Timing
The client needed to adhere to a broader programme plan agreed with the Great North Rail Project.
2. Workforce safety
Traffic management solutions needed to protect Murphy workforce whilst undertaking railway bridge repairs.
3. Maintaining traffic flows
The A570 is a busy commuter route, with high peak demand.
SOLUTION
1. Initial Planning
Early contractor involvement at the planning stage included surveys to determine the optimum solution.
2. Local Council Liaison
Regular communications with Local councils and sharing of traffic management designs.
3. Smart Solutions
These included Temporary Vertical Concrete Barriers and use of Impact Protection Vehicles.
RESULTS
- Effective deployment of solutions to allow safe access to the working area
- Ensured safety of the Client’s workforce during bridge repairs
- Maintained traffic flows, minimising delays
BENEFITS
GTM proposed a clear and more precise route for closure, reducing motorist travel time and emissions.
GTM engaged with the outsourced subcontractor and coordinated the installation of Temporary Vertical Concrete Barriers (TVCBs) the night before the client start date to ensure a smooth start.
